Stupinikids Newsletter May 09

As we write this newsletter we have just a month left of this schools term before the kids break up for the summer holidays.

It is unbelievable how quickly this year has gone and we are so grateful and thankful for the support we receive in seeing this vital homework club continue.

Currently at the school homework club we have a core group of 12 kids who turn up daily. A few months ago one of the kids packed in the school homework club for various reasons. This caused heartbreak for us as we have seen this happen so many times and the implication it has with the kids then dropping out of school, not getting a job and just seeing that cycle of poverty being repeated again.
However we were overjoyed in seeing the child coming back to the club last week with a determination to perserve with her education.

For the last few years the homework club has been renting space at Asociatia Centrul Vietii Noi. The centre is several miles away from the Stupini area. This means the kids everyday have to catch 2 buses to get the centre and 2 buses to get home, whether its sun, rain or snow. Even with these obstacles its so encouraging to see so many kids coming faithfully everyday.

Two weeks we submitted a request to the Mayor of Brasov for permission for land in the Stupini area. This has been our dream for the last 7 years. Running parallel to this Steve Marsh and a group of guys on the Isle of Wight are looking to raise funds to allow us to purchase some portocabins.

The implications in having a base in Stupini are huge as it means we can have a far bigger impact in this needy community as we reach to these kids and their families.

We ask for your prayers as we await for our request to considered by the Mayors office over the next few weeks and of course if any of our readers have portocabins they wish to donate please contact us.

On the other news we are currently organising the summer camp for the kids which will be happening at the end of June and we are looking forward to Andy Robinson and his team, from Horsham, who will be coming out to help us run this.

The homegroup which Nicu and Rodica run on a Saturday is going well with core group of about 8 kids attending this.

One of our challenges for next year is that some of our committed volunteers who have grown up with the stupinikids now finish their schooling and will be hoping to go onto University. Although we are excited and rejoice in seeing some of our team finish their schooling successfully it is also with sadness as we realise that we may be losing some great committed volunteers which will have an impact on our resources.

However we look forward to this new season we are entering with excitement and an anticipation in what it around the corner and we thank you all for the support you have given us to allow us to be a blessing to these kids.

With Love
Lacra, Anna & Team

Interview with Rodica a Stupinikids Volunteer

Lacra’s husband, Andy Burne,  recently caught up with Rodica Zaharniciuc one of the volunteers at the Stupini project to find out more about her work with Stupinikids and how she got involved. Rodica also runs the Stupinikids house group on Saturdays with Nicu another volunteer with Stupinikids.

AB (Andy Burne): Rodica how long have you been involved with the Stupinikids project.

RZ (Rodica Zaharniciuc): I have been involved with Stupinikids now for about 10 years. The first 2 years it was a kids club and then it became Stupinikids as we know it now about 8 years ago. I live in Stupini and went to the kids club when I was 10 years old and for the last 5 years I have been a volunteer.

AB: Wow that is a long time to be involved in the project. So you went there when  you were a child growing up in Stupini and now you are one of the volunteers. How did the Stupinikids club help you when you were a child?

RZ: When I was a child I was very shy which resulted in me being quite lonely. I also lacked a lot of confidence but when I started to come to the club it helped me to intergrate with the other kids and it basically helped me blossom as a person.

AB: You said you have been volunteering now for the last 5 years. I also notice that you go the homework club faithfully everyday, straight after your school to help the young kids with their homework. I’m actually quite amazed at this commitment you’ve had for the last 5 years. Why are you so committed as an unpaid volunteer?

RZ: I know all these kids and I was one of them once and they don’t have good conditions to learn as their parents all work and just don’t have the time to help them. I just want to be help to these kids and see them finish their schooling as it’s essential that they get this chance in life.

AB: So basically you are a role model for these kids in that you have done the club as a child and now you are finishing senior school which generally speaking most kids from Stupini would have dropped out by now. When do you actually finish school and what happens after you finish school?

RZ: I finish school this summer and I want to go onto university if I get good grades and get the necessary funding to allow me to go onto university.

AB: Thanks Rodica for this interview it is so encouraging to see how you volunteer and that you and the other volunteers are the evidence that the Stupinikids project has a positive impact into these kids lives.

RZ: You are welcome

Mothers Day & the Reptiles Visit

March 8th in Romania was  Mothers Day a day which is taken very seriously in Romania with all Mothers given flowers, chocolates and presents.

To encourage our Stupini Kids to celebrate their Mothers the kids at the homework club, last Friday, made cards for their Mums. The kids took great enthusiasm in creating their cards and they used their little imaginations to create some interesting cards for their Mums. As you can see from the photo’s we might have identified some works of modern art!!!

On the Saturday (March 7th) we took the kids who come to the Stupini Kids  Saturday church group to a Reptile Exhibition which is currently in Brasov. The Saturday club is a small home group where about 5 to 10 kids from the Stupini Kids Project attend. The Saturday club is led by 2 of our dedicated volunteers; Nicu and Rodica.

The kids on arriving at the Reptile Exhibition were amazed in seeing a live crocodile , deadly spiders and nasty looking snakes…. reptiles they would have never of dreamed of  seeing before.  It was great just taking the kids to this exhibition, as in reality they would probably never get the chance to do something like this themselves.

Thanks to everyone for making it possible in serving this brilliant but needy group of kids

Christmas Party 2008

Christmas Party

On the 15th of December we held the Christmas Party for the Stupini Kids which was also shared with the Street Kids Christmas Party.

We had approximately 40 Stupini kids including the dedicated team of volunteers.

The party started with a few Christmas carols, some games and some the kids sang, danced and read poems. Lacra then brought a gospel message. Father Christmas then burst onto the scene ( It was actually Dragos… sorry to break your dreams) and the Shoebox presents were given out to the kids.

I’m always amazed and so deeply touched in seeing the joy and excitement on these kids faces as they receive their presents.

These presents mean so much to these kids and we really want to thank Kings Church Horsham for their faithfulness over the years in serving these kids and having such a positive input into their lives.

These shoeboxes may seem so insignificant to many but to these kids they are so significant and on behalf on everyone at Stupini Kids I thank you all.

God Bless and Love

Christmas 2008 Appeal

christmas-stupini-kidsIT CAN’T BE CHRISTMAS ALREADY!

Summer holidays are over and the kids are back at school, but probably the last thing on your mind is Christmas! However, for the volunteers here at the Stupini Kids charity we are already preparing for Christmas in Romania.

Each year we send out many, many shoeboxes to these wonderful children in Stupini who would otherwise receive no gifts at all. Christmas day would be just the same as any other.

If you would like more information, please contact us

Shoeboxes can be done by:

  • Individuals
  • A family
  • A youth group or Sunday school class
  • Cubs, Scouts, Brownies or Guides
  • Work colleagues

All you need to do is download this form which will give you all the details on how to put your box together and where to take it when completed. We do ask for £3 to cover the cost of transport. If you would like more information, please contact us.

CLOSING DATE
All completed shoeboxes must be returned by Monday 3rd November at the very latest. Any boxes received after this date will be put towards our 2009 appeal!

Whilst we are so grateful to all those who gave in whatever form, there is much more we can do. So many other children we can reach, so much more we can do to improve these children’s lives and to give them a real chance to “Educate themselves out of Poverty”. If you are able then please think about making either a regular donation, or a one off gift to this project. Every little really does help, and if you can commit monthly there is so much more we can plan to do knowing we have a regular income. Please take a moment to look around the site to find out more about us, and then if you would like to please visit our gifts page.
